Hack-Ma-Tack Inn Information

From the moment you pull up to Hack-Ma-Tack Inn at 8131 Beebe Rd in Cheboygan, MI, you can tell this isn’t your run‑of‑the‑mill dinner stop-it’s a place steeped in local history and full of character, with its roots as a hunting and fishing lodge dating back to 1894 and the name itself coming from the Native American word for tamarack, the wood used in its construction. Nestled among towering trees on the banks of the Cheboygan River with big windows that frame the water, it feels like a real northern Michigan experience before you even glance at the menu.

Stepping inside, the atmosphere hits you right away: rustic logs, historic décor, boats floating by outside, and that timeless lodge vibe that makes you want to linger over every course. Locals and visitors alike tend to agree it’s more than just a meal-it’s dinner with a view, the gentle motion of the Inland Waterway playing backdrop to everything from cocktails at the full bar to a slow‑roasted prime rib that’s often singled out on reviews. The menu leans into classic American fare with chops like prime rib, fresh Great Lakes whitefish, steaks and even South African lobster alongside a thoughtful wine list, and many reviewers have complimented the freshness and quality of the ingredients.

Service here can feel old‑school in the best way, attentive without rushing you, which just invites more time to savor dishes like the calamari appetizer or that perfectly roasted cut of meat while the sun dips low over the river. That said, like any place with decades of history, opinions on consistency vary: some diners rave about decades of great family meals in this cozy location, while others note that specific dishes or service experiences have been mixed on different visits. What doesn’t get disputed is the setting-you can score a window seat and watch boats glide by with your dinner on the table, and it really elevates the whole evening.

One of the things that keeps people coming back, aside from the food and views, is the genuine local feel; it’s not slick or pretentious, it’s part of Cheboygan’s fabric. Reservations are widely recommended, especially in summer when boating season brings out both tourists and longtime Northern Michigan regulars, and the overall vibe runs warm and welcoming even if the experience isn’t identical every time. If you’re looking for a memorable dinner spot with a historic backbone, varied menu, and one‑of‑a‑kind location right on the river, this restaurant’s got all that in spades.

What People's Say About Place

First time here, was recommended for their steaks. The atmosphere is old lodge feel, clean and eclectic. We started with a drink at the bar, the bartender was friendly and we settled on a martini and Manhattan, both were good. For dinner, I chose the steak medium rare. It was cooked perfectly, but it was not very tender. It felt like a lesser grade than prime. Our server was very pleasant and overall I would recommend dining here

Ordered the Whitefish w/almonds & steak fries - the fish was overcooked & dry - steak fries were burnt to a crisp. Others were happy with their orders - for the price the food was disappointing - atmosphere and location were great - service was very good

Nice place! This was an old hunting and fishing lodge, as I understand it. Now a fine dining restaurant. We just went for drinks and appetizers so I can't speak of the full menu, but the calamari and white fish dip starters were excellent! I'll be back for dinner during another visit to the area.

Up scale. Not run of the mill. Great atmosphere. Awesome food. Wonderful service. Be prepared for surprising desserts also. The small Prime Rib is larger than expected! The grill isn't hot enough for the"Pittsburgh Style", but the cook is top-notch and we were very satisfied. The Coconut Cream Pie is the best served anywhere. Come by Boat or car. Enjoy the experienc!

This is my favorite place to boat to. Such a cool spot tucked into the woods on the water. The best of all worlds. Food is fantastic. The legend of the big-black-bass is ingrained in my mind from the years of coming here!

One step inside the Hack-Ma-Tack and you understand why is MLive's "Michigan's Most Iconic Restaurant." Awesome ambiance, location and FOOD. The chef served up calamari, ribs, twice baked potato and broccoli that were absolutely delicious! This friendly, historic place is a must-experience!

Char was our server and she was the nicest server!! My husband and I shared the wedge salad and then each had the prime rib and mashed potatoes and they were delish! Our view from the table was the river.

Beautiful, historic Inn and Dining! This was by far our best meal in Michigan. Amazing wine selection, perfectly prepared, fresh meals, and outstanding service. Very romantic atmosphere, and wonderful surroundings.
